What Is IMPERIALISM? -THE BUILDING OF EMPIRES: Extending the countries power and influence through colonisation -A STRONG nation takes of a WEAKER nation or region and dominated its ECONOMIC, POLITICAL and/or CULTURAL life. -Winning empires brought ADVENTURE and GLORY, their exploitation brought WEALTH and TRADE
Causes of IMPERIALISM -INDUSTRIALISATION: Because abundant, raw materials are needed to maintain an industrialised economy. -NATIONALISM: Pride in ones country (Glory through dominating other peoples countries with your own)
Characteristics of IMPERIALISM - Foreign Lands taken over: Indigenous culture was viewed as inferior. Their enslavement was seen as a cheap source of labour. Were politically ruled by the military (inhumanely). -The invading country used the resources for industrialisation and modernisation for themselves.
Examples of IMPERIALISM Africa was divided between many colonies for their 'RAW' materials i.e ivory but more importantly RUBBER. -The Congo: Workers were sent to climb trees for rubber-producing vines- their sap smeared over the body to be carried back and painfully ripped off. -The policy of cutting off hands was seized because, EUROPEAN MASTERS distrusted their native workers- non-cooperation was treated with force.
What is NATIONALISM? -THE POLITICAL VEIW THAT YOUR OWN COUNTRY IS PERF AND BELIEVE STRONGLY IN NATION-LIKE MECHANISMS SUCH AS THE ARMY AND NAVY. -The aggressive feeling of pride and joy towards one's country.
What is ANARCHISM? -THE POLITICAL THEORY which aims to create a society within which individuals FREELY COOPERATE TOGETHER AS EQUALS. -NO GOVERNMENT, LAWS, nor RIGHTS TO PROPERTY
ANARCHISM info -Between 1894 and 1914, 6 national leaders were killed by assassins who believed in the movement. -Didn't have a long term future: those who followed eventually realised true PROGRESS needed ORGANISATION.
What is SOCIALISM? -The DESIRED ABOLITION of PRIVATE PROPERTY and the REDISTRIBUTION of WEALTH so to provide EVERYBODY with Enough.
SOCIALISM info -The coming war was a problem-because as NATIONALISM grew, SOCIALISTS were torn between INTERNATIONAL BROTHERHOOD, or PATRIOTISM. (UNITING or FIGHTING)
LONG TERM CAUSES OF WORLD WAR ONE -IMPERIALISM: COMPETITION + DESIRE for GREATER EMPIRES led to confrontation. -MILITARISM/ARMS RACE: GERMANY had GREATEST military build up. BRITAIN and Germany increased Navies. -NATIONALISM: SLAVS in BOSNIA didn't want to be part of AUSTRIA-HUNGARY-but SERBIA-Causing each country to prove DOMINANCE and POWER.
(short term) CAUSES OF WORLD WAR ONE (Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand) -JUNE 1914- Serbian Nationalist and wife assassinated in SARAJEVO, BOSNIA (Part of AUSTRIA-HUNGRAY) -As a PROTEST to A-H via SERBIA, who wanted to take over Bosnia. -AH then declared war on SERBIA. Causing RUSSIA to mobilise in order to Defend due to their ALLIANCE . As Russia Prepared for war, their GERMAN neighbours then declared war on them.
(short term) CAUSES OF WORLD WAR ONE ('The Blank Cheque') -GERMANY gave AUSTRIA-HUNGARY a Guarantee of unconditional Support in any war arising from it's dealings with SERBIA. -Following the Assassination of Franz Ferdinand, AH would not act without GERMANY'S support.
(short term) CAUSES OF WORLD WAR ONE (The Ultimatum) -Nearly a month after the assassination, Austro-Hungary finally responded with an ultimatum for Serbia. - Serbia refused to comply with all the demands made and Austro-Hungary declared war on 28 July.
(long term) CAUSES OF WORLD WAR ONE (The Alliance System) - THE TRIPLE ALLIANCE: Germany, Austria Hungary, Italy -THE TRIPLE ENTENTE: French, Russia, Britain (one in-all in)
(long term) CAUSES OF WORLD WAR ONE (Arms Race/ MILITARISM) -As an island nation, BRITAIN was dependent on a good navy to protect it. GERMANY also began building up its navy. Britain saw this as a THREAT and a RACE began between the two countries to see which country could build the biggest and best boats.
