Question Answer
What are the two types of microscope? Light microscopes and electron microscopes
How does a light microscope work? What kinds of things can they see? Uses light and lenses to form an image of a specimen once magnified. They can see individual cells and large sub cellular structures such as nuclei
How does an electron microscope work? What kids of things can they see? Use electrons instead of light to form an image. They have a higher magnification, and a higher resolution. Electron microscopes let us see small things in much more detail, like mitochondria, chloroplasts and even things like ribosomes and plasmids.
What is resolution? Resolution assesses the ability to distinguish between two points.
What is the formula for magnification? magnification= image size / real size
What is a prokaryotic cell's division called? Binary fission
What are the four stages of binary fission? 1) The circular DNA and plasmids replicate 2) The cell gets bigger and the circular DNA strands go to opposite ends of the cell 3) The cytoplasm begins to divide along with a new cell wall beginning to form. 4) The cytoplasm divides fully, leaving two daughter cells
What is contained by each daughter cell after binary fission? One copy of the circular DNA, with a variable number of plasmids. Also, the standard cell wall, membrane and cytoplasm.
How can conditions affect cells in binary fission? If the conditions are right (Warm and nutririous) some bacteria can divide as quickly as once every 20 mins. However, the conditions, if unfavourable, can cause the cells to stop dividing and maybe even start to die.
