Flashcards
Global Warming
Cards in this deck (6)
- 1Describe the greenhouse effectSome of the electromagnetic radiation from the Sun reaches the Earth and is absorbed. The Earth then re-emits it as infrared radiation. Various gases in the troposphere absorb some of this IR and re-emit it in all directions - including back towards the Earth, keeping us warm.
- 2What are the 3 main greenhouse gases?Water vapour
Carbon dioxide
Methane - 3What are the factors that determine how much a gas contributes to the greenhouse effect? How much IR radiation one molecule of gas absorbs
How much of that gas there is
How long the gas stays in the atmosphere - 4In 1997, the Kyoto protocol was signed. What was this protocol?Industrialised countries promised to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions to agreed levels
- 5TRUE OR FALSE: The Kyoto protocol came to an end in 2012 and currently has no replacementTRUE
However, many governments agree that they need to reduce CO₂ emissions by around 50% by 2050 - 6in the UK, what has the government done to try to prevent global warming?Created policies to use more renewable energy sources (e.g. wind)
Encouraged the use of more energy-efficient alternatives to everyday objects (e.g. energy-saving bulbs and electric cars)
