| Line 65 (relationship between Claudius and Hamlet) | Hamlet - "A little more than kin, and less than kind!" Hamlet's first words demonstrate his feelings of despise towards his uncle. Kind could mean: 1) Claudius is not the same as Hamlet and the late King (not the same type of person) 2) By moving on so quickly, Claudius is not considerate to the memory of Hamlet's father and demonstrates to the reader that he is not actually in mourning - creates the idea that he may have something to do with Old Hamlet's death. |
| Lines 68-69 (persuading Hamlet to stop mourning) | Gertrude - "Cast thy nighted colour off, And let thine eye look like a friend on Denmark." *Uses the theme of appearance vs reality due to telling Hamlet to "look like a friend" - she cares more about how she is perceived and her social status than her son's emotions. *'Cast thy nighted colour off ' means that she is asking Hamlet to stop mourning (not a very motherly thing to do) *Claudius is trying to convince him to get over his father's death to be able to get away with his murder more easily (not one looking in to it as everyone has forgotten about it) |
| Lines 72-73 (theme of nature + deceit) | Gertrude - "All that lives must die, Passing through nature to eternity" *Ironic that the Queen is describing the death as natural, as by the end of the play the audience knows that Old Hamlet's death was on purpose and caused by his brother (who is now King). *Demonstrates Claudius' deceit and lies which are the start/cause of many deaths throughout the play. *Foreshadows the ending of the play where many of the characters meet their end. *The ghost of Old Hamlet has not passed on to eternity as the audience find out later on in the play (he is stuck in limbo - between heaven and hell). |
| Lines 129-130 (Hamlet's wish to die) | Hamlet - "O that this too too sullied flesh would melt, Thaw, and resolve itself into a dew" *Due to Old Hamlet's death, he wishes he could end his life and that God had not made suicide a sin. *Hamlet's wish to die exists even before learning about the fact that Claudius killed his father - due to the actions of his mother and Claudius + the death of his father. *Vivid and horrific imagery used to describe the extent of his anguish and hurt due to his father's death and what he believes is his mother's betrayal (for marrying Claudius only a month later). |
