Flashcards
C5 Chromatography
Cards in this deck (8)
- 1What is chromatography? An analytical method used to separate the substances in a mixture.
- 2What are the 2 phases of chromatography? The mobile phase, and the stationary phase
- 3During a chromatography experiment, how do the substances act?they constantly move between the mobile and stationary phase - an equilibrium is formed
- 4Why do substances in a mixture separate during chromatography?different chemicals have different distributions between the same phase, so they'll spend different amounts of time in each phase.
- 5What causes a substance to move further through the stationary phase? As the mobile phase moves up through the stationary phase, any substances attracted to the mobile phase, move with it. The more time, a substance spends in the mobile phase, the further it moves through it.
- 6What will happen if a pure substance is used during chromatography?Only one spot will appear
- 7What will happen if a mixture is used during chromatography?Multiple spots will appear (as long as they have different distributions)
- 8How do you carry out a paper chromatography experiment?1. draw a line near the bottom of the filter paper in pencil.
2. add a spot of the substance on the line, and play the sheet in a beaker of solvent
3. place a lid on top to minimise evaporation
4. when the solvent reaches the top draw a line and let the paper dry.
