Flashcards
C4 more on polymers
Cards in this deck (9)
- 1What are 3 examples of naturally occurring polymers?DNA, carbohydrates, and Amino acids
- 2By what type of polymerisation are Amino acids formed?condensation polymerisation
- 3What type of bods hold polymers together?covalent bonds
- 4What type of forces are between the chains of polymers?intermolecular forces
- 5Why are most polymers solid at room temperature?the intermolecular forces between the polymer molecules are stronger than between simple molecules so more energy is needed to break them - more energy than is present at room temperature.
- 6Why do polymers generally have lower melting points than ionic or giant covalent compounds?the intermolecular forces are still weaker than ionic or covalent bonds
- 7How does the structure and forces between the polymer chains of low density polythene make it good for its uses?Theres lots of space between the polymer chain, so the forces between the chains are relatively weak. this means it's flexible and so is used for bags and bottles
- 8How does the structure and forces between the polymer chains of high density polythene make it good for its uses? The chains are packed more closely together, so the forces between them are stronger. this makes it stiff, so its used for drain pipes and water tanks.
- 9What are the difference in properties between polymers with crosslinks, and polymers with only intermolecular bonds?polymers with crosslinks are held together very strong so can't be softened or melted by heat
Polymers with only intermolecular forces are made up of individual tangled chain that can slide past each other. they can be melted.
