Erikson is supposed to have founded a Viking settlement at Vinland. Vinland today is known as the Canadian island of Newfoundland.
Erikson has had 6 statues erected in his honor. They are located in Iceland, Norway, Boston, Seattle, Cleveland and Minnesota.
Leif Ericson was the son of a Norse chief Erik the Red, named for his red beard. Erik the Red discovered Greenland.
It wasn't until 1964 that congress gave approval for Leif Erikson Day to be celebrated as a national holiday.
