Flashcards
aqueous solutions
Cards in this deck (5)
- 1What is brine?a concentrated sodium chloride solution (salty water)
- 2The electrolysis of brine is a very important industrial process. What are the products when brine is electrolysed?• hydrogen gas
• chlorine gas
• sodium hydroxide solution - 3What happens at the anode?• positive electrode - lose electrons
• chlorine is produced
• the chlorine ions are oxidised, as they lose electrons and the chlorine atoms bond in pairs and are given off as gas, Cl2:
2Cl- - 2e- → Cl2 - 4What happens at the cathode?• negative electrode- gains electrons
• hydrogen is produced
• the hydrogen from the water, and the sodium ions are both attracted to the electrode
• the less reactive element, hydrogen ions are discharged
• the ions are reduced as they gain electrons and bond together to form H2:
2H+ + 2e- → H2 - 5Describe the solution left behind.→ the electrolysis of brine leaves Na and OH ions which is a solution of sodium hydroxide, NaOH
→ the solution contains OH- ions so it is therefore alkali
