Elizabethan Social Hierarchy
Elizabeth's Privy Council Elizabeth surrounded herself with 19 trusted advisors, this group was known as the 'Privy Council'. The council met daily to discuss domestic and foreign issues: war, foreign ambassadorial relations, and the enforcement of the Religious Settlement. To avoid conflict, Elizabeth used a policy of 'divide and rule'. To 'divide and rule', Elizabeth allowed only 8/9 councilors to meet regularly, flattered to provoke jealousy and rewards.
William Cecil Elizabeth appointed Cecil as the Secretary of State in 1558. In 1571, Cecil received the title 'Lord Burghley'. Personally, Cecil was a protestant. After his involvement in the execution of Mary, Queen of Scots in 1587 Elizabeth refused to see him.
Sir Francis Walsingham Appointed on the 20th of December 1573 as Elizabeth's Secretary of State; he held this role till his death on the 6th of April 1590. Known as Elizabeth's spymaster due to his disruption of the Babington, Ridolfi
