Flashcards

C1 Chemistry

Swift Law Chemistry GCSE English 7 cards

Cards in this deck (7)

  1. 1What is the particle model?Particle model describes the arrangement of particles and their movement in different states
    -Explain properties of substance
-Can compress a gas as space between the particles but cannot for liquids or solids as no space between particles
-Solids can not flow as the particles in fixed shape and vibrate around fixed point
  2. 2What is a physical change?-Change in state of matter
    Reversible
    -No new substances are made
-Particles stay the same but arrangement and movement changes
  3. 3What is a chemical change?-Change that produces one or more new substances
    -Irreversible
-Different properties in products then that of reactants
-Particles break apart and join in different ways
  4. 4What is an element, atom and molecule?-Element- Substances whose atoms have the same atomic number
    -Atom- Small particle of element
-Molecule- Particles consisting of two or more atoms chemically bonded together
  5. 5What are the relative mass and relative charges of subatomic particles?Proton mass= 1 charge =+1
    Neutron mass= 1 charge =0
    Electron mass= 0.0005 charge =-1
  6. 6What is atomic mass, mass number, isotopes and ions?-Atomic numbers- the number of protons or electrons
    -Mass number- Number of protons+neutrons
-Isotopes-Elements with the same number of protons and electrons but different number of neutrons. Atomic number is the same but different mass number
    Ion- Charged particles
  7. 7Who contributed to the development of the atomic model?1870s- John Dalton
    Atom small indestructible sphere
All atoms in a element are the same
Atoms in one element are different to the atoms of another element
    1897- J.J Thomson
Investigated Cathode Rays given out by hot metals
Discovered Cathode Rays are made from electrons
    Worked out electrons are negative
Plum pudding model, neutral atom contains negative electrons in a positive cloud
1909- Ernest Rutherford (With Geiger and Marsden)
Materials emit positively charged alpha particles
‘Gold foil experiment’ He fired alpha particles at a gold foil sheet
    Contradicted Plum Pudding Model
Suggested Atoms are made of tiny positive nucleus surrounded by electrons
Suggested nucleus has most of the atom's mass
    1913-Niels Bohr
Suggested Electrons move in fixed orbits called electron shells
Mathematical Models to show electrons occupy fixed energy
