Question Answer
ATOMS Smallest particles of matter that cannot be broken down into anything more simple by chemical means
SUBATOMIC PARTICLES •Protons •Neutrons •Electrons no of electrons = number of protons
PROTONS Charge : Positive Mass : 1 Location : In the nucleus of the atom
NEUTRONS Charge : 0 Mass : 1 Location : In the nucleus of the atom
ELECTRONS Charge : negative Mass : 0 Location: Electron cloud
ATOMIC/PROTON NUMBER Number of protons in an atom
NUCLEON/MASS NUMBER Number of PROTONS and NEUTRONS in an atom
ISOTOPE Atoms of the same element with the same number of neutrons but a different number of PROTONS - therefore have similar physical propertied but different chemical properties
RADIOACTIVE ISOTOPES & Uses • Emit radioactivity from the nucleus and decay into more stable atoms Uses: medical = used to STERILIZE medical equipment ; used to treat cancer Industrial = used to detect leaks in oil and gas pipelines
NON-RADIOACTIVE ISOTOPES Isotopes which don't show radioactive decay
