Cards in this deck (39)
- 1C3C3
- 2Labelled diagram of an atom...

- 3Where is the nucleus located? The middle of the atom
- 4What does the nucleus contain?Protons and neutrons
- 5What charge does the nucleus have?Positive because of the protons
- 6How big is the nucleus compared to the rest of the atom?Tiny, but almost the whole mass of the atom is concentrated in the nucleus
- 7What do the electrons do?Occupy shells around the nucleus and move around the nucleus
- 8What is the charge of the electrons?-1
- 9How big are electrons?Tiny but cover a lot of space
- 10What determines how bug the atom is?The volume of their orbits
- 11What is the mass of the electrons?0.0005
- 12What is the mass and charge of a proton?Mass= 1
Charge= +1 - 13What is the mass and charge of a neutron?Mass=1
Charge=0 - 14What is equal to the number of protons? The number of electrons
- 15What is the overall charge of a neutral atom?0
- 16What is the charge on an electron the same size as?The opposite of the charge on a proton
- 17What happens if an electron is lost or gained? The atom becomes charged and is then an ion
- 18What does the mass number tell you?The total of protons and neutrons
(it is the top number) - 19What does the atomic number tell you?The number of protons
- 20How do you get the number of neutrons?Subtract the atomic number from the mass number
(Top - bottom) - 21What number is always bigger?Mass number (top)
It tends to be roughly double the proton number, meaning there is usually an equal number of protons and neutrons in a nuclei - 22What is an isotope?Different atomic forms of the same element, which have the same number of protons, but a different number of neutrons
- 23Why do isotopes have the same atomic number but different mass numbers? If they had different atomic numbers they would be different elements
- 24Diagram of carbon isotopes...

- 25How many types of atom do elements consist of?1 only
- 26Can elements be broken down chemically?No
- 27What are compounds? Two or more different elements chemically bonded
- 28How do the properties of a compound compare to the original elements? They are completely different
- 29What is ionic bonding? The attraction between positive and negative particles called ions

- 30What is covalent bonding?Sharing a pair of electrons

- 31What is the name for the vertical columns on the periodic table?Groups
- 32What is the name for the horizontal rows on the periodic table?Periods
- 33What is the name for group 1 elements?Alkali metals
- 34What is the name for group 7 elements?Halogens
- 35What is the name for group 8 elements?Noble gases
- 36What does each new period represent?Another full shell of electrons
- 37What does the period to which the element belongs to correspond with? The number of shells of electrons it has
- 38Labelled groups in the periodic table...

- 39What do the elements in each group all have in common? The number of electrons in their outer shell
