1. Atomic Structure - History

Nikodem Czarlinski Chemistry A2 English 7 cards

Cards in this deck (7)

  1. 1What happened in 1661?Robert Boyle overturned Aristotle's conception of the four elements and proposed that there are some substances that cannot be made simpler. These were the chemical elements.
  2. 2What happened in 1803?John Dalton suggested that elements were composed of invisible atoms. All the atoms of a particular element had the same mass. Atoms could not be broken down.
  3. 3What happened in 1896?Henri Becquerel discovered radioactivity which showed particles could come from inside the atom so it is not indivisible
  4. 4What happened in 1897?Thompson discovered electron, first subatomic particle. Later suggested plum pudding model, electrons located in circular arrays within a sphere of a positive charge accounting for the mass.
  5. 5What happened in 1911?Rutherford demonstrates the existence of positively charged nucleus that contains nearly all the mass of an atom.
  6. 6What happened in 1913?Bohr proposed fixed circular orbits around nucleus for electrons
  7. 7What happened in 1926?Schrodinger electrons occupy regions of space around nucleus determined by their energy.
