Endocrine Lab

Cards in this deck (15)

  1. 1—Pituitary Gland!
Anterior - left - endocrine - made mostly of epithelium
Posterior - right - exocrine - made mostly of neural tissue
Pituitary Gland! Anterior - left - endocrine - made mostly of epithelium Posterior - right - exocrine - made mostly of neural tissue
  2. 2—Posterior Pituitary!
Cells = pituicytes = glial cells = modified neuron
Hormones produced = Antidiuretic hormone (ADH) & Oxytocin
Posterior Pituitary! Cells = pituicytes = glial cells = modified neuron Hormones produced = Antidiuretic hormone (ADH) & Oxytocin
  3. 3—Anterior Pituitary!
    Three cell types (ABC's):
    1. Acidophiles
    2. Basophils
    3. Chromophobes
Anterior Pituitary! Three cell types (ABC's): 1. Acidophiles 2. Basophils 3. Chromophobes
  4. 4—1. Acidophiles = love acid = second most common - lightly stained cytoplasm - pink color
*Hormones produced = GH, PRL (MSH)
    2. Basophils = love basic items = most common - bottom circle where it is dark
*Hormones produced: TSH, ACTH, LH, FSH
    3. Chromophobes = afraid of color = least common - middle purple color
*Hormones produced: we do not know
    1. Acidophiles = love acid = second most common - lightly stained cytoplasm - pink color *Hormones produced = GH, PRL (MSH) 2. Basophils ...
  5. 5—Thyroid!
    Two types of cells:
    1. Follicle cells
    2. Parafollicular cells
Thyroid! Two types of cells: 1. Follicle cells 2. Parafollicular cells
  6. 6—Thyroid!
    1. Follicle cells
    *Simple cuboidal
    *Hormones produced = T3 & T4
*T3 and T4 stored in these cells until they need to be released
*Thyroid hormone is the regulator of most human tissues in body to increase metabolism
    2. Parafollicular cells
*Are in between follicles but not lining is
*Also known at C or clear cells
    *Hormones produced: calcitonin
Thyroid! 1. Follicle cells *Simple cuboidal *Hormones produced = T3 & T4 *T3 and T4 stored in these cells until they need to be relea...
  7. 7—Parathyroid!
    1. Chief cells
    *Most common
    *Dark purple
    Hormones produced: parathyroid
    2. Oxyphils
    *More red cells
*Do not know what they do
Parathyroid! 1. Chief cells *Most common *Dark purple Hormones produced: parathyroid 2. Oxyphils *More red cells *Do not know what they do
  8. 8—Pancreas!
    Cell types:
    1. Acinar (not endocrine)
    2. Alpha
    3. Beta
Pancreas! Cell types: 1. Acinar (not endocrine) 2. Alpha 3. Beta
  9. 9—1. Acinar (not endocrine)
    *Exocrine cells with ducts
*Many of these cells! - 85%
*Release digestive enzymes to break down macromolecules
    2. Alpha
*In the little cluster of cells - pancreatic islets - islets of Langerhans
    *More red
    *Hormones produced: glucagon
*Released when blood glucose levels are high
*Glucagon mostly goes to liver and is stored as glycogen
*When glycogen bonds break you get individual glucose molecules
    3. Beta
*In the little cluster of cells - pancreatic islets - islets of Langerhans
    *More blue
    *Hormones produced: insulin
*Released when blood glucose levels are low
    1. Acinar (not endocrine) *Exocrine cells with ducts *Many of these cells! - 85% *Release digestive enzymes to break down macromolecules ...
  10. 10—Adrenal Gland! (just be able to recognize it)
    1. Adrenal cortex (outer)
    2. Adrenal Medulla (inner)
Adrenal Gland! (just be able to recognize it) 1. Adrenal cortex (outer) 2. Adrenal Medulla (inner)
  11. 11—1. ADRENAL CORTEX
    *Hormones produced: steroid
    *Three layers!
    1. Zona glomerulosa - salty - aldosterone - increases sodium retention in the body
    2. Zona fasciculata - sweet - cortisol - makes energy available for our bodies to use - increase fatty acid metabolism - elevates glucose levels
    3. Zona reticularis - sexy - testosterone, estrogen, progesterone
    2. ADRENAL MEDULLA
    *Chromaffin cells
    *Hormones produced: epinephrine & norepinephrine
