| "We're human beings just like them!" | Lady Runcie-Campbell believes she is superior to the lower classes. Duror enjoys the small luxuries he is given because of his higher-status job as a gamekeeper, but Neil hates the class structure and this carrries through to the end. |

"Because they were doing no harm." | Here Jenkins makes a subtle comparison of TCH to the dear that have effectivly been chaced out of the wood throught the voice of Neil. TCG have done nothing wrong and are innocent yet are also effectily being chaced out of the wood by Duror. |

I'll tell you something: the cell he'd lock me up in would be bigger that our hut, aye, and cleaner." | Earlier on in the novel the shed that TCG are living in get compared to that of the size of a rabbit hutch. The fact that the jail cell is enough to display the image that the place they live in is dank, smelly and depressing. Neil later complains about how the Lady has many spare free rooms up on her estate where she lives, but denies the access to the mantion. Another devison between the classes. |
