Question Answer
Does Osmosis use ATP? No it's a passive movement
Osmosis definition The passive movement of water from an area of high concentration (less negative) to an area of low concentration(more negative).
What is a solute? A substance that can be dissolved by a solvent to create a solution.
What is a solvent? A molecule that has the ability to dissolve other molecules.
Water potential A measure of how freely water molecules can move.
What is the water potential of pure water? 0kpa
How does the water potential work in animal cells? When too much water moves in the cell bursts. When too much water moves out the cell shrivels.
Isotonic Same on the outside as inside
Hypotonic Osmotic concentration of solutes is lower than in the cytoplasm.
Hypertonic Osmotic concentration of solutes is greater than in the cytoplasm. E for extrinsic as its greater outside.
How does osmosis work in plants? When the plant cell is placed in a hypotonic solution, it takes up water by osmosis and starts to swell, but the cell wall prevents it from bursting. The plant cell is said to have become ‘turgid’, i.e. swollen and hard. The pressure inside the cell rises until this internal pressure is equal to the pressure outside. This liquid (or hydrostatic pressure called ‘turgor pressure’) prevents the further net intake of water. When a plant cell is placed in a hypertonic solution, the water from inside the cell‘s cytoplasm diffuses out and the plant cell is said to have become ‘flaccid’.The process is reversed as soon as the cells are transferred into a hypotonic solution.
