Question Answer
What is a microscope? An instrument used to magnify small things in order to make them more visible to us.
What is microscopic used to describe? Microscopic is used to describe objects that can only be seen using a microscope.
What is a specimen? The object being looked at through a microscope.
What is an image? An image is what is seen through using the microscope.
What are ocular lenses? The lens of the microscope closest to your eye, also known as the eyepiece.
What is a light microscope? A light microscope is a microscope that uses light to reveal the image.
What is a monocular microscope? A monocular microscope is a type of light microscope which has only one eyepiece or ocular lens.
What is a binocular microscope? A light microscope with two eyepieces or ocular lenses is known as a binocular microscope.
What is a stereo microscope? A stereo microscope is a binocular microscope (2 eyepieces) focusing on the same point from different angles so the image is seen in three dimensions.
What is the objective lens? The lens of the microscope closest to the stage (where the specimen is placed).
What is magnification? The amount by which the image is magnified (made bigger) compared to the real size of the object (specimen).
What is the field of view? The amount of the specimen seen through the microscope. (More magnification means you are seeing less of the specimen).
What is a micrometre? A micrometre is either one-thousandth of a millimetre or one-millionth of a metre.
What is an electron microscope? An electron microscope is a type of microscope that uses beams of electrons to magnify up to a million times.
What are the 2 types of electron microscopes? The 2 types of electron microscopes are: 1. (TEM) transmission electron microscope 2. (SEM) scanning electron microscope
What is the difference between TEM and SEM? TEM's specimen is a thin slice, electrons pass through specimen, provides view of inner structure, image b&w can be coloured to increase contrast. SEM's specimen can be anything, electrons reflect off surface of specimen, gives magnified views of objects, images b&w but can be given false colour using computers
What are two types of lenses found in a light microscope? 2 lenses found in a light microscope : 1. Ocular lenses 2. Objective lenses
Definition of dissect? To dissect is to cut apart a dead plant or animal to study and observe it.
3 differences between monocular or binocular (mon or bin) microscopes and stereo microscopes? 1. Monocular and binocular provide a 2D image of the specimen whereas the stereo microscope provides a 3D one. 2. In the stereo microscope when the object is moved the image appears to move in the same direction, whereas in the other 2 it appears to move in the opposite direction. 3. Stereo has a max magnification of x100, other 2 microscopes have a max of x1000.
How is the total magnification of a microscope calculated? Total magnification = ocular lens magnification x objective lens magnification.
