Question Answer
Random Sampling A small amount of people are selected from a sampling frame. Names are randomly selected (computer generated/picked out of a hat)
Stratified Sampling 2 lists are made and respondents are randomly selected
Systematic Sampling Every nth number is selected from a sampling frame. e.g every 3rd person on the list
Quota Sampling Quota controls are set such as age, gender, ethnicity And people are found to fit into these categories
Snowball Sampling Small groups of people are chosen. They are asked to pass on details of he study to other people. The sample gets bigger as it rolls from one person to another (like a snowball)
Opportunistic Sample Interviewing/Giving questionnaires to whoever is available to take part in the study
Anonymity Making sure no names are mentioned in your finished report or data
Confidentiality Keeping personal details between the researcher and the respondent
Informed Consent Making sure your respondents know what you are doing and agree to participate
Gatekeeper Getting the permission of someone who allows others to participate e.g if your sample involves young children then permission is need from parents/teachers who are the gatekeepers
Safety Researcher need to ensure that the respondents and the researcher are not in harms way during the study
Qualitative Data Information presented in the form of words or images that are rich in description and detail
Qualititative Data Information presented as numbers which can be analysed using statistical methods
Participant Observations Researcher is involved in the study
Non-participant Observation Researcher watches the study and doesn't get involved Adv= Easier to record information Disadv= Less information gained
Overt Observation The group know why you are there Adv= No ethical problems Disadv= Observer Effect
Covert Observation Undercover You are a part of the group No informed consent Adv= No observers effect More valid Disadv= Difficlt to repeat study to check reliability
Unstructured Interviews Informal loose conversations with respondent Respondent talks freely but researcher keeps the conversation in the right direction Adv= More valid Disadv= Time consuming
Open ended Questionnaires Respondents answer questions how they choose and give explanations
Focus group Opinions of a small group are recorded and taken into account
Longitudinal Study Studying the same group of people over a period of time After the initial interviews/surveys have taken place, follow up interviews/surveys are carried out at intervals over a period of a few years
Structured Interviews Interviewer asks set questions and records respondents answer. Conducted face to face or via telephone. Adv= Questions are standardised so sociologists can compare answers Disadv= Respondents have few opportunities to raise new issues
