EOI - C1 MONOLOGUE - INSTRUCTIONS You'll be given a topic and5 minutes to prepare your talk. You can take notes or make a brief plan of what you are going to say. Then, you'll talk to the examiners for about 3-4 minutes. You can use your notes during your talk, but you cannot read them aloud. Your production will be recorded.
1 CONSUMERISM In its broadest sense, consumerism can be seen as a particular view of the 'good life' – a view that says life is better when you have more 'market goods'. Talk about: Factors that influence consumerism. Benefits and drawbacks of consumerism. Whether you believe that changing your spending habits can make a big difference in your life
2 INFLUENCERS A girl who posted pictures of a motorbike accident on her instagram account has faced accusations of staging her accident. Talk about How social networks affects the way we portray and view life, and the risks of sharing information online
3 OBSESSION We live in a society that is obssessed with looks. There’s a whole industry behind beauty products, with influencers playing a great role to sell them. Talk about: The reasons for this obsession Compare the standards of beauty now with those in the late 50s. The dangers associated with “medical” methods that promise you to keep fit with no effort
4 HOUSEWORK Housework is no longer a woman’s thing, and household chores are shared by both members of the couple. Talk about whether the division of labour in your household compares to the one your parents / grandparents had, how the fact that women joined the labour market has affected traditional roles and family life and what measures should be taken to have an effective work-life balance.
5 MINDFULNESS More and more people have fallen under the spell of this new meditation technique. It’s so popular that some teachers also include it as part of their class routine. Talk about the underlying causes of anxiety and stress in today’s society, how important it is to have a good body-mind balance, and what the key to well-being might be.
6 CYBERCRIME Cybercrime is on the rise and more and more people fall pray to it. Talk about the most common types of cybercrime, whether the public is well informed and whether the penal system fulfils its role of punishing this and other types of crimes.
7 WORKING FROM HOME With the new health crisis more and more people are staying home and teleworking. Talk about the pros and cons of this arrangement, whether company’s mindsets will change regarding teleworking in the future and what the working world will look like when the crisis is over.
8 TECHNOLOGY We live in an era dominated by the use of fast-developing technology. Accessibility of gadgets raises the questions of their use and misuse, and sparks the debate about the need to censure its contents, especially when it comes to younger users. Talk about whether fast moving trends in technology respond to real needs or to business interests, what kind apps should be regulated due to their effect in younger users, and to what extent gadgets affect human relationships.
9 RECYCLING There’s plenty of facts out there on why recycling is important. The world population is grow-ing, not shrinking, and currently each human being adds significant waste to the planet over his or her lifetime. Talk about how recycling is beneficial (or not) for the planet, whether you consider the recycling and trash policies in your country are effective and the benefits and drawbacks of recycling at a personal level
10 REALITY SHOWS The proliferation of reality shows makes some get stuck to the screen while others seek out ‘easy’ fame. Talk about What makes people watch this kind of shows The price to pay to become famous through these programmes The role of the media in promoting the cult of celebrity
