What is the tala in Indian music? A repeating rhythmic pattern
Tintal/Teental is the most common tala. Describe how it is organised/arranged? It is organised in a 16 beat rhythmic cycle
In the tintal/teental tala, what is 'sam'? The first beat of the rhythmic cycle
What is a matra? The individual beat in a rhythmic cycle
What are bols? These are the independent rhythm parts in a tala that go against the main beat of the cycle creating syncopating rhythms.

What is a sarangi? A fretless bowed instrument that has three main strings
What is a bansuri? A bansuri is an Indian flute without keys
What is a shehnai? A shehnai is a double reed instrument and is similar to a Western oboe
What is a pakhawaj? A barrel shaped, two headed drum
What is an esraj? A bowed instrument with frets
What is a rag? A pattern of ascending and descending notes used as the basis for melodic improvisation in Indian music.
What is a raga? Improvised music in several contrasting sections based on a series of notes from a particular rag.
What is a sitar? A plucked, stringed instrument
What is a sarod? It has two sets of strings, a lower range and a heavier tone than the sitar
What is meant by the term 'gharana'? Indian system of master-pupil teaching
What is meant by the term 'rasa'? Mood created by the sounds of the pitches in a particular rag
What is the Indian Raga structure? 1) Alap 2) Jhor 3) Jhala 4) Gat/Bandish ('gat' is just instruments whereas 'bandish' is vocals too)
Alap . Sitar improvises using the Rag scale . slow/no beat or pulse . Tambura plays the drone
Jhor . The music speeds up a bit . Steady beat is introduced . Sitar and Tambura play together with more rhythm.
Jhala . The music is much faster . More exciting . Still improvises around the Rag scale
Gat/Bandish . Tabla comes in . Group plays a pre-determined piece . Sometimes improvisation is added to the existing melody . Question and answer between instrumentalists
What is a tambura? A stringed instrument that plays the accompaniment (drone)
Which two instruments are included in Rag Desh? Alap and Bandish
What is the rag in 'Rag Desh' associated with? The late evening and the monsoon season
