COPD A respiratory condition caused by reduction of airflow due to the destruction of the alveoli. Encompasses - Chronic Asthma, Emphysema, Chronic Bronchitis
Causes Smoking Passive smoking Exposure to occupational or environmental pollutants - dust, gas, fumes. Genetic - small number have protein disorder AATF which causes emphysema.
Diagnosis Lung function test Chest x-ray CT scan Arterial blood gas analysis
Clinical Manifestations SOBOE Productive cough Frequent chest infections Dyspnoea Generalised weakness Distended neck veins Cyanosis / hypoxia / hypercapnia Barrel chest
