Computer Science: Unit 4: Memory and Storage

HRYN red Computer Science GCSE English 19 cards

Cards in this deck (19)

  1. 1What are the 3 main types of Primary Storage?Registers
Main Memory (RAM) Random Access Memory
    ROM Read only Memory
  2. 2What are registers?Small active memory areas that can hold one item of data at a time. Content changes with each fetch-execute cycle
  3. 3RAM 3Stored using electronic charges.
    Volatile memory
Stored in running programs, operating system, data currently being used.
    Access fast
  4. 4ROM 3Fixed memory. Doesn't use electricity.
    Non-volatile
Stored in bootstrap - computing bootup instructions.
    Can't take on new content
  5. 5Primary StorageActive electronic memory inside the CPU
  6. 6Volatile memoryContent of which is lost when the computer is turned off.
  7. 7Are they volatile, non-volatile or both? Primary Storage Secondary Storage Offline Storage Give examples of eachPrimary - volatile and non-volatile ROM RAM
Secondary - non-volatile ie SSD HDD
Offline storage - non-volatile ie CD, DVD, USB, HDD, flash drive
  8. 8Secondary StorageMemory that is not directly accesses by the CPU
  9. 9Off-line StorageAny device that can hold data that is not permanently connected to the computer
  10. 10HDD and give adv and disHard Disk Drive - non-volatile storage that uses magnetic storage technology.
    Slower than SSD, large
    Cheaper per unit data
  11. 11SSD and give adv and disSolid State Drive - non-volatile-uses flash technolgoy - traps electrons
Adv Fast, portable, light weight, stores lots of data
Dis - less reliable in long term, more expensive than magnetic
  12. 12Magnetic StorageConverts data into magnetism. Mechanical parts move over disks surface to read and write data magnetically
  13. 13Advantages 3 and Disadvantages 3 of Magnetic Storageadv - Cheap, vast storage capacity, fast write speed
Dis - lost of mechanical parts, durability issue, not very portable
  14. 14Optical StorageRead by a light beam. A disk is covered by a thin reflective layer. Lazer hits a pit or mark, reflection is less bright - difference given in 1s and 0s - digital data
  15. 15Advantages 3 and Disadvantages 3 of Optical StorageAdv - cheap, easily portable, little space taken up
Dis - less storage compared to others, easily damaged, slow write speeds
    ie CD, DVD, Blu-Ray
  16. 16What to consider when choosing storage 5Capacity
    Reliability and durability
    Portability
    Cost
Speed of access - hard drives wired are fastest
  17. 17Cloud Storagedata sent along Internet connection to be stored
  18. 18Advantages of Cloud Storage 3Access data from any device with internet access
Internet company backs up data - no risk of being lost
doesn't take up any storage on won device
  19. 19Disadvantage of Cloud Storage 2Some concerns of privacy
    Cannot access without Internet
