Adjacency pairs An adjacency pair, used in spoken language, is a pair of conversation turns by two different speakers. E.g Offer-acceptance/rejection
Hedges These are words that down tone the meaning of the following word or add of note of vagueness. E.g a-bit, may, quite
Overlapping Speech encounters are usually co-operative and mosts overlaps will therefore be resolved quickly. (talking over each-other)
Tag question A question converted from a statement by an appended interrogative formula E.g. 'It's nice out, isn't it?'
Utterance A spoken word, statement or vocal sound.
Loan word A word adopted from a foreign language with little or no modification.
Field specific lexis Refers to the diction that is specific to a certain field. E.g. Scientific medical terms; anatomy, symptoms etc..
Euphemism A mild or indirect word or expression substituted for one considered too harsh/blunt.
Clipping In morphology, a word formed by dropping one of more syllable(s). E.g. Cell from cellular phone
Filler An apparently meaningless word, phrase or sound that marks a pause or hesitation in speech.
Turn-taking A term for the manner in which conversation normally takes place.
Prosodic features These are features that appear when we put sounds together in connected speech.
Figurative speech Any expressive use of language. E.g. Metaphor/Simile
Convergence Where we change our language to show we like someone.
Accent A distinctive way of pronouncing a language, especially one associated with a particular country, area or social class.
Back-Channeling This is a ay of showing a speaker that you are following what they are saying. E.g. 'Mmm, yeah, really?'
Dialect A particular form of a language which is particular to a specific region or social group.
Chaining A series of things of the same type that form a connected line.
Divergence Where we make our language different to show we do not like a person.
Contraction A contraction is a shortened version of the written and spoken forms of a word, syllable, or word group, created by omission of internal letters. E.g. Can't instead of cannot
Idiolect The speech habits particular to a specific person.
Phatic Relating to language used for general purposes of social interaction. E.g. 'How are you? The weather is nice.'
Taboo language A descriptive term for words, objects, actions or people that are forbidden by a group/culture.
Repair In conversational analysis, the process by which a speaker recognises speech error and repeats what has been said with some sort of correction.
