Flashcards
Genetic Variation
Cards in this deck (3)
- 1Why organisms are different: The information that results in plants and animals having similar characteristics to their parents is their genes. Genes are passed on in the sex cells (gametes) which the offspring develop. The nucleus of a cell contains chromosomes. Chromosomes carry genes that control the characteristics of the body.Different genes control the development of different characteristics in the body.
Genes operate on a molecular level to develop characteristics that can be seen.
Differences in characteristics may be different due to the environment.
May be due to a combination of environmental and genetic causes. - 2Reproduction: There are two forms of reproduction- sexual is the fusion of the male and female gametes. In sexual reproduction there is a mixture of the genetic information from 2 parents which leads to variety in the offspring. -Asexual reproduction is when there is no fusion of the gametes. Asexual production has no variation in the offspring. The genetically identical individuals are known as clones.New plants can be produced quickly and cheaply by taking cuttings from the parent plant, these plants are genetically identical to the parent plant.
- 3another method of cloning plants is tissue culture.methods of cloning animals are embryo transplant and adult cell cloning.
