Flashcards
atmospheric pressure
Cards in this deck (8)
- 1atmospheric pressure varies with the height above the earth's surfaceatmospheric pressure decreases with increasing height above the earth's surface
- at a higher altitude - the gas particles are more spread out so they generate less pressure - 2the atmosphere of earth is made up of countless gas particles all flying about in random directionsanytime a gas particle collides with anything it exerts a tiny force on the thing it hits
-(means any object in earth is being constantly hit from all sides by a huge number of tiny forces - 3atmospheric pressuretotal force of all the air particles constantly colliding with everything from all sides
- 4pressure in a fluid (fluid - liquid or gas)pressure of gas (eg held in a balloon)
depends on atmospheric pressure
- the air exerts an inward force on the outer surface of the balloon(if this force is greater than the outward force exerted by the gas particles inside, the balloon will collapse) - 5in space there is a lower atmospheric pressurethe gas inside would exert a greater outward force on the balloon surface compared to the thinner air from the outside so the balloon can expand
- 6increasing the amount of particles in a balloon (blowing it up)increases the amount of collisions the balloon surfaces experiences per second (so there is a greater pressure on the inside and the balloon will expand)
- 7pressure in a fluid causes...a force perpendicular to any surface
pressure = force/ area - 8pressure in fluids vary with density and depthDEEPER IN A FLUID YOU ARE, GREATER THE PRESSURE- greater the amount of fluid above the object, so greater weight, so greater the force felt, so the greater the pressure
DENSER THE FLUID IS THE GREATER THE PRESSURE - mass= density x volume (greater density = greater weight of fluid on the object, so greater force and pressure)
