- 3Key issues: Conflict and LoveThe marriage of the militarily minded Othello and the demure Desdemona prevokes very strong reactions in Act 1
- 4key issues: RaceNegative descriptions of the hero draw our attention to the theme of race.
Elizabethans were prejudiced against foreigners and had fears of miscegenation (mixed race babies= monsters?)
the black man had been associated with the devil in literature--> Moors were viewed with suspicion because they were considered heathens. - 5Key issues:: Gender and Powerassertive heroine Desdemona, who chooses her own husband. her deception of her father also highlights appearance vs reality- which Iago depends on
Desdemona does not have power to determine her own fate: it lies in the hands of the men who abuse her - 6Key Context: HamAfricans are believed to be descendants of Ham- son of Noah- who was cursed to only have black children. This tradition partly accounts for the racial prejudice expressed by Roderigo and Iago
