2.1.1 Atomic Structure & Isotopes

Joshua Hunt Chemistry A2 English 6 cards

Cards in this deck (6)

  1. 12.1.1 (a) IsotopesAtoms of the same element with
different numbers of neutrons and different masses
  2. 22.1.1 (b) What to look at with questions on Atomic Structure?Number of protons, neutrons and electrons for atoms and ions, given the atomic number, mass number and any ionic charge.
  3. 32.1.1 (b) True or False: The Atomic Structure model has stayed the same over the course of millenia?FALSE
Different models for atomic structure can be used to explain different phenomena, e.g. the Bohr model explains periodic properties. The accepted model of atomic structure has changed over time. Evidence from lab experiments/research has been used to accept or reject particular models
  4. 42.1.1 (c) Define "relative isotopic mass" and "relative atomic mass"relative isotopic mass =
"mass compared with 1/12th mass of carbon-12"
    relative atomic mass =
    "weighted mean mass
compared with 1/12th mass of carbon-12"
Additional: Definitions are based on mass of 12C = the standard for
    atomic masses
  5. 52.1.1 (d) (i) and 2.1.1 (d) (ii) Describe the method used to calculate the relative atomic mass of an element (X) from a mass spectrometer.1. Identify the number of isotopes on the Mass Spectrometer by counting the number of peaks.
    2. Take note of the formula Relative Atomic Mass = ∑ (isotope mass x isotope abundance) / 100. [∑ = Sum of, meaning use the formula next to it for every isotope,
    then add the results together]
    3. Write down each isotope, it's abundance, and it's mass (look to the graph y and x axis for help)
    4. Use the information written down to fill in the formula
  6. 62.1.1 (e) Use of the terms relative molecular mass, Mr, and relative formula mass and their calculation from relative atomic massesFor simple molecules, the term relative molecular mass will be used.
For compounds with giant structures, the term relative formula mass will be used.
Definitions of relative molecular mass and relative formula mass will not be required.
