Question Answer
Word equation and balanced chemical equation for photosynthesis:
In which kind of cell does Photosynthesis take place? Palisade Mesophyll Cells
Where does the Light-Dependant Reaction occur? In the Grana/Thylakoids
Where does the Light-Independent Reaction occur? In the Stroma
2 things needed for the Light-Dependent Reaction to occur: Light and H2O
3 things needed for the Light-Independent Reaction to occur: ATP, reduced NADP (NADPH) and CO2
What is the purpose of light in the Light Dependent Reaction? To 'excite' electrons in the chloroplast and bring them to a higher energy level (photosystem ll)
What happens to the electrons after their energy levels have been raised in photosystem ll? They are passed down a chain of electron caririers
The energy released when as the electrons get passed down the carrier chain is used for what process? Photophosphorylation (ADP + Pi --> ATP)
Leftover electrons after being passed down the carrier chain do what? Replace those lost in Photosystem l
After being raised to a higher energy level, what do the electrons in photosystem l do? They go to reduce NADP
Energy from electrons in photosystem ll are also used in which process? Photolysis
What is Photolysis? The splitting of water molecules
What are the products of photolysis? H+ (proton), electron, O2 gas
What do the products of photolysis do? H+ (proton) goes to reduce NADP, electron replaces those lost in photosystem ll and O2 gas is released as a waste product
In the Light Independent Reaction, which coenzyme 'fixes' Carbon Dioxide after it diffuses into the leaf? RUBP (Ribulouse bisphosphate) - carbon acceptor molecule and a 5 carbon molecule
What happens after RUBP 'fixes' Carbon Dioxide? 2 Glycerate 3-phosphate (GP) are formed by enzyme reactions (GP is a 3 carbon molecule)
What is the next stage in the Calvin Cycle (The Light Independent Reaction) Energy from the breakdown of ATP (into ADP + Pi) and a hydrogen ion from reduced NADP (oxidation) are used to convert GP into Triose Phosphate (TP)
What is TP then used for? Some TP is recycled back into RUBP and some is converted into glucose via enzyme reactions to be respired, converted etc.
Name 5 Limiting factors of Photosynthesis: (out of 9) 1) Light intensity 2) Carbon Dioxide concentration 3) Temperature - (in relation to enzymes) 4) Wavelength (colour) of light 5) Chlorophyll concentration 6) Water availability 7) ATP concentration 8) NADPH concentration 9) Ribulose bisphosphate (RUBP)
