Photosynthesis

1,247 resources created by 986 users

This Photosynthesis page on GoConqr gathers community-made quizzes, mind maps, flashcards, notes, slides and flowcharts, from the light-dependent stage and the Calvin cycle to limiting factors and leaf starch tests. It's built for school students revising a topic and for teachers after ready-made material, with a few university students filling gaps. There are over 1,100 resources here, including more than 100 quizzes, over 500 mind maps and over 400 flashcard decks. Try a quiz to find your gaps, then pick a map to revisit them.

About Photosynthesis

GoConqr Original

What you will find here

This unit sits in the Plant Biology strand of Biology and natural sciences. It holds over 1,100 resources made by more than 900 contributors. Mind maps are the biggest group, with over 500, followed by over 400 flashcard decks and more than 100 quizzes. Notes, slide sets and flowcharts fill out the rest.

Where to start

Begin with the mind map Biology Unit 4.3.1- Photosynthesis. It covers why photosynthesis matters and how light is turned into chemical energy. Then open The Rate of Photosynthesis, which looks at light, carbon dioxide, temperature and water as limiting factors. The map How plants use glucose shows what happens to the sugar afterwards, including respiration.

The two stages in detail

For the light-dependent stage, try Photosynthesis Light Dependent Stage and Cyclic Photophosphorylation. For the light-independent stage, the Calvin Cycle map follows RuBP, carbon dioxide, glycerate 3-phosphate and the enzyme rubisco in the stroma. A flowchart on the light-independent reaction gives a second view of the same steps.

Practicals and experiments

The slide set Required Practical 8: Dehydrogenase Activity shows an example investigation using chloroplasts. Its author notes it may not be the only way to run it. The slides Experiments of photosynthesis explain why leaves are destarched and how iodine shows starch. Testing a Leaf for Starch is a quick map to pair with them.

Using quizzes and maps together

  1. Read one mind map on a sub-topic.
  2. Take a quiz such as Photosynthesis Quiz without looking.
  3. Note the questions you missed and go back to the matching map.
  4. Test yourself again with a flashcard deck.

Some resources mention GCSE Biology, A-level Biology, AP Biology and IB Biology, so you can look for the one that matches your course. Teachers can set a quiz or share a map as ready-made material. When you're ready, pick one resource and work through it.

Frequently asked questions

Which resource should I open first?

Start with the mind map Biology Unit 4.3.1- Photosynthesis for an overview of the process and why it matters. Then try the Photosynthesis Quiz to see what stuck. If a question catches you out, go back to the relevant map, such as the Calvin Cycle.

What do the mind maps cover?

They cover the two stages of photosynthesis, including cyclic photophosphorylation and the Calvin cycle, along with the rate of photosynthesis, chloroplast structure, leaf adaptations, ATP and how plants use glucose. There are also maps on testing a leaf for starch, which suit practical work.

Which exams do these resources suit?

Most of the resources are at school level. Listed titles and descriptions mention GCSE Biology, A-level Biology, AP Biology and IB Biology, as well as AQA A-level Biology. Check the title or description of a resource to see whether it matches your course before you begin.

Are the resources free to use?

Yes. Every resource listed here is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. A free account also saves your quiz scores and lets you make your own quizzes, mind maps, flashcards and notes.

Who made these resources?

They were made by GoConqr users, not by GoConqr itself. More than 900 contributors have added quizzes, maps, flashcards, notes and slides. Because they come from different students and teachers, it helps to compare a few resources on the same topic.

Is there anything on practical work?

Yes. The slide set Required Practical 8: Dehydrogenase Activity gives an example investigation into dehydrogenase activity in chloroplasts. Experiments of photosynthesis covers the starch test, and a note asks how to show that photosynthesis produces starch. Treat them as examples to adapt.
