Flashcards
C2- Structure and Properties and Polymers
Cards in this deck (11)
- 1What do the properties depend on?The arrangement of molecules.
How they are held together. - 2How are the molecules arranged when a material has a high density? The polymer chains are packed close together.
- 3How are the molecules arranged when a material has a low density? The polymer chains are spread out.
- 4What happens when there are weak forces between the polymers? The polymers are able to slide over each other making it stretch easily. It also has a low melting point.
- 5What do the forces do to the polymers?Create a solid mass.
- 6What happens when there are strong forces between the polymers?Higher melting points, and can't easily be stretched because of cross links.
- 7What are cross links? What effect does this have on the material?Links that bond chains together to make them stronger (Imagine bricks)
This makes the material stiffer, stronger and more heat resistant. - 8Can polymers be modified? Why?Yes, to give them different properties.
- 9Give an example of how polymers can be modified?Increase chain length.
Add plasticisers which make the polymer softer. - 10What is a plasticiser? They go between polymer chains and reduces the force between them, making them softer.
- 11What is a crystalline polymer? What are their properties? It has straight chains with no branches so the chains can fit close together.
Their properties are a higher density, they are stronger and have a higher melting point.
