figured bass	bass + figures - continuo doing extra chord
ternary	structure goes A - B - A
fugue	a common 3 section structure exposition, B section - final section
contrapuntal counter point polyphony	two melodies played "against" each other
subject	first thing you hear in a piece
answer	after the subject
gigue (from the word "jig")	triplet feel, dotted, quavers in the counter subject (usually danced to)
stepwise scalic	the melody goes up in steps
diatonic	a melody that only uses the notes of the scale
tonic	chord 1
dominant	chord 5
cadance	two chords that end a phrase (perfect = 5-1)
trill	quick ongoing change between two notes
