What is Ellis Island? Chief Immigration Station located at New York Harbor through 1892-1943 with 16 million people passing through
Angel Island? Main Immigration center for Asians and Chinese located in San Francisco.
What hardships did people at Angel Island Experience? Immigrants had to go through a very long journey only to then spend a long time in Angel Island getting -Health Checks -Name hecks -Culture Shock Ethnic Island Forms groups of one culture living in one section of a city (Such as China Town) where communities were created and people pooled Money and Resources together. These formed due to Families coming over and creating large groups of people.
What are the Three views on Immigration? Melting Pot Theory Salad Bowl Theory Nativism
What was the Melting Pot Theory? All groups should mix and have no culture diversity -System works but doesn't follow through
What is the Salad Bowl Theory? Groups should be mixed but still culture diversity
Explain Nativism? Favoring Native born and discriminating against immigrants. This caused anti-immigration groups to form (Hate Groups) and people attempted to keep out the "Undesirables"
What is the Anti-Asian Sentiment? Prejudice was first directed at the Chinese. It was established because when the great depression hit Cal. in 1873, there were no jobs. Chinese worked in silver, coal, gold, and railroads. Americans feared chinese would get the jobs. Violent Anti-Chinese riots began and Unions pushed for immigration restriction and they wanted to protect American Jobs. The Chinese were the only group to face such restrictions.
Explain the Chinese Exclusion Act? Act that took place in 1882 and ended 1943 that Banned the entry to all chinese except those who could help America (Teachers, Students, Government Officials, Merchants, etc.)
What was the Act that expanded Anti- CHinese Sentiment to spread to Japan/ Korea? The Gentlemans Agreements of 1907-1908. It was an agreement from Roosevelt and Japan and Japan restricted Immigrants from coming to America.
Where did Immigrants settle? In the City, where there was low rent nd jobs for unskilled workers. Or Country, to farm but farming was beginning to lose jobs due to the advancement of technology and African Americans were going North.
What were Row Houses? Single Family dwelling s shared walls with other building. MAny people were packed together. Best kind of house because you didn't have to share. But very dangerous because fire could spread easy to the the close proximity.
Explain Tenement Houses? Multi Family homes that were crowded and overwhelmed. Very unsanitary conditions. Most popular immigrant houses.
What were Dumbbell Tenements? Long 5 story houses shaped like Barbells which allowed an outside window for each room
What kinds of transportation did America have before and during the Industrial Boom? Before: Horse Drawn Carriages and manual labor. After: Electric Street Car and subways industrialized Transportation. People built waterways, chlorination introduced in 1894, and filtration in 1908
Were the cities sanitary? No. Very unsanitary but Industry inserted sewer lines and over population only made this issue grow.
Why were fires common in Cities? Limited water supply limited resources to put out fire. Overcrowded wooden building that had burning kerosene and flammable objects.
Was there crim in the city? Yes. People formed gangs and people became gypsies that targeted non-english speaking immigrants. Police was established to reduce crime rates.
Who was Jane Addam? Began Settlement House Apartments which were centers set up to help urban poor immigrants. The system was run by educated women and gave education culture and social services. This system was very successful.
What was the Gilded Age? Late 1800 and early 1900 where there was much corruption below politics
Explain Political Machines? Gave service to voters and businesses in exchange for political/financial support. These systems had much power and would do anything necessary to keep it. It ran most of the big cities and worked like a pyramid. They used voter fraud and accepted bribes.
What did political bosses do? Head of political machines. They controlled city jobs, influenced courts/agencies, solved urban problems to get political support, government systems hired to do their work.

What was Tammany Hall? Democratic machine in New york City that was lead by William "Boss" Tweed. His "Tweed Ring" stole 200 million $ in 6 years. Used systems such as kick back (getting people work illegally) to get people to do as they say.
What was it about the USA that drew so many immigrants at this times? People came to America for economic support and religious freedom.
What was the difference between New immigrants and Old immigrants? Old Immigrants often settled at Farms. They often came alone and planned to save money in the USA then return homes. They came from Italy, Greece, Poland, Hungary, and Russia in large numbers. New Immigrants came in large groups or with family. They settled in cities and wouldn't return home. They were mainly from Ireland and Germany and often Catholic, Jewish, and Orthodox.
Immigration act of 1924? A quota to how many immigrants from countries can come in.
