2.2.2 Sub-shells and energy levels

Cards in this deck (6)

  1. 1Sub-shellsSub-shells
  2. 2Electron energy levelsElectron energy levels
  3. 3Aufbau principleSet of rules used to workout the elecron configuration of an atom.
  4. 4The electrons in the shells of an atom are arranged as follows:Electrons are added, one a time, to 'build up' the atom
The lowest available energy level is filled first. This level is closest to the nucleus
Each energy level must be filled before the next, higher energy level starts to fill.
  5. 5Sub-shells are made up of several orbitals, each with the same energy level:when a sub-shell is built up with electrons, each orbital is filled singly before paring starts
the 4s orbital is at a slightly lower energy level than the 3d orbital. this means 4s will fill before 3d.
  6. 6'Last in, first out'The electron in the highest energy position would be the first electron to be removed during ionisation.
