Question Answer
Clinical Characteristics Depression is a mood disorder. There are two types of depression - major depressive disorder and persistent depressive disorder (long term and/or recurring).
Emotional Characteristics Negative emotions such as sadness, loss of interest and sometimes anger.
Behavioural Characteristics Reduced or increased activity linked to energy levels, sleep and eating.
Cognitive Characteristics Irrational, negative thoughts and self-beliefs that are self-fulfilling
Cognitive Explanations Ellis' ABC Model: A. is the activating event B. is the belief (rational or irrational) C. is the consequence. Activating event leads to a rational or irrational belief, which then leads to consequences. Rational beliefs lead to healthy emotions. Mustabatory thinking (I MUST be liked) caused disappointment and depression
Beck's Negative Triad A negative schema can develop at childhood which can lead to cognitive biases. A Negative Triad consists of an irrational and negative view of 1. Self, 2. The World and 3. The Future
Cognitive Explanations Evaluation :) - Practical applications for treatment and CBT :( - Blames the individual and ignores situational/ environmental variables :( - Alternative explanations such as the role of genes and serotonin are not
Cognitive Treatments CBT: Ellis' ABCDEF Model Extends on this. D focuses on disrupting the irrational beliefs. E is the effect of the disputes and F are the feelings produced because of this. CBT also involves homework, which is normally to test these new behaviours and rational beliefs at home.
CBT cont. As well as behavioural activation, which is were individuals are encouraged to peruse pleasurable activities asns also unconditional positive regard which hopefully reduces the sense of worthlessness normally experienced by those with depression
Cognitive Treatments Evaluation :) - Supporting research shows 90% success rates (Ellis) :( - Does not consider alternative treatments such as quicker, cheaper drug therapies :( - Individual differences are ignored such as those that are rigid thinkers and do not want advice
