- 1The Fractional Distillation of Crude Oil Crude Oil is a thick, black, viscous liquid that floats on water. It is formed from the remains of sea animals and plants that died and were buried millions of years ago. It is composed of a very large mixture of Hydrocarbons. A hydrocarbon is a compound which contain the elements of hydrogen and Carbon.Oil refining involves the SEPARATION of these hydrocarbon into mixtures (fractions) which are VERY IMPORTANT and EXTREMELY useful. This process is called fractional distillation.
The crude oil is heated in a fractionating column. As they cool and condensate the different fractions are collected from the column. - 2Separation of Rock Salt 1. Prepare a sample of Rock Salt by grinding up a portion using a pestle and mortar. 2. Add the sample to 100ml of water 3. Pour the solution through filter paper which is held by the conical flask. 4. Pour the filtrate into an evaporation dish. 5. Heat up the filtrate I the dish using a Bunsen burner for 5 minutes. 6. Place the remaining sample into a crystallisation dish and leave to dry slowly.Red Cabbage indicator
1. Place a sample of red cabbage into a pestle.
2. Grind with a mortar
3. Filter the extract
4. Test extract on a range of pHs
5. Record observations - 3The Air Air is a mixture of gases. The composition of the Air Nitrogen : 79% 284.4 degrees Oxygen : 20% 72 degrees Carbon Dioxide : 0.03% 0.108 degrees
