Flashcards
Types of sampling
Cards in this deck (11)
- 1Why is sampling done?-To estimate the number of organisms in an area
- Measure a particular characteristic - 2What is the abundance of an organism?Number of individuals of a species
- 3What is random sampling?- Selecting individuals by chance using random number tables or computers
- 4What are the 3 types of non-random sampling?-Opportunistic
- Stratified
- Systematic - 5What is Opportunistic sampling?- Uses organisms that are conveniently available
- 6What is stratified sampling?- Population divided into strata (sub groups) based on a particular characteristic
- 7What is systematic sampling?Different areas within a habitat are identified and then sampled separately
- 8What is a line transect?- Making a line along the ground between 2 poles and sampling from different points on a line
- 9What is a belt transect?2 parallel lines marked, samples taken from areas between 2 lines.
- 10What is sampling bias?- Selection process may be bias
- Reduced by random sampling - 11What is chance?- The selected organisms, by chance, may not be representative of the whole population
- Effect minimised by taking a larger sample.
