How did the Nazis effect Youth movements? - Nazi Government ran youth programmes such as military clubs (Hitler jungvolk) for boys and motherhood clubs for girls - Classes (upper/lower/etc) were all mixed together - People created Anti-Nazi groups: genders were mixed, grew long hair, listened to popular music
How did Weimar Germany treat women? - women aged 20+ given votes -20 female members of Reichstag - Women likely to work and get equal pay to men - Women enjoyed more social freedom + showed this through clothing
How did Nazis see women? Nazis believed women should be good mothers which meant: - staying healthy -learning housecraft - marrying and enabling their husbands to be good German workers - Have children + bringing them up as good Germans
Women couldn't: - perm or dye their hair -wear makeup -wear trousers
Nazi Women 'policies': - German Women's Enterprise: classes & radio broadcasts teaching motherhood - Women encouraged to leave work and focus on three K's (Kitchen, Children, Church) -Some professionals(lawyers/doctors/etc) forced to give up work
What Law did the Nazis pass to encourage marriage? 1933 - Law for Encouragement of Marriage - 1000 marks given to young couples to marry if wife gave up work - For each of their first 4 children they were allowed to keep 25% of their loan
What was the Mother's cross? Mother's Cross - increased childbirth - On 12 April (Hitler's mums birthday) medals were given out to women with lots of children (4/5 kids - Bronze, 6/7 - Silver, 8+ - gold)
What was Lebensborn? 1935 - encouraged childbirth - At first - offered nurseries + money to women with Children of SS men - Later it made 'single women available for fertilisation by SS men' to create genetically pure children to be adopted by worthy families
What happened in the end of 1930s (linked to women)? -German industry was growing so women had to do some work - Nazis believed their policies to women were fair however some women thought it would encourage men to see them as inferior
What was the DAF? After 1933 Trade union ban - DAF set up: - ensured workers served Nazis best interests - Organised employers, working hours and wages so men could no longer complain about poor conditions
What was the RAD? - 1933 -RAD set up: - tackled unemployment by making manual work - First it was voluntary but made compulsory in 1935 - Similar to army (uniforms, military drills and camps to live in) -Food + pay were low and bad
What and when was the 4 year plan? 1936 - Hitler created 4 year plan: - meant Germany had to be ready for war within 4 years - Government rearmament spending increased - plastic/oil/rubber production increased - German army grew
What were the reasons FOR Nazi Germany having a good standard of living? - less unemployment, higher wages - luxury products (e.g. cars) increased - SdA (beauty of labour) offered good food, lighting + ventilation for workers -KdF (strength through joy) offered leisure activities and holidays for workers
What were the reasons AGAINST Nazi Germany having a good standard of living? - Trade union ban - no freedom - Unemployment figures false (didn't include women/Jews made to quit work) - Rising prices outweighed wage increase - Great depression=very bad so any improvement was returning to normal - Imports rose higher than exports - Government spent ^ than tax income
Why did people dislike Jews? - their religion/customs/looks made them 'different' - Christians blamed them for death of Christ - When times were hard, people wanted someone to blame
What was the order of races according to Mein Kampf? - Aryan race - superior - other races (e.g. Slavs) - lesser races -Africans (and others) - sub-humans -Gypsies + Jews - lowest (deemed 'unworthy of life')
Persecution of Jews timeline: April 1933 - Jews businesses boycotted April 1933 - Jews banned from Government jobs Sep 1933 - Jews banned from inheriting land May 1935 - Jews banned from army June 1935 - Jews banned from restaurants
What were the Nuremberg laws? (1935) 1935 - -Only those with German blood could be German citizens - Jews couldn't marry German citizens
What were the Nuremberg Laws? (1938) -Jews had to carry identity cards saying that they were Jews -Jews had to register possesions to make it easier for them to be confiscated - Jewish doctors/lawyers/dentists banned from working for German clients
