Flashcards

Muscle tendon interactions and flexibility

alexlpeart Exersice Physiology English 11 cards

Cards in this deck (11)

  1. 1Give 5 factors affecting range of movement at a joint.Age, Gender, Genetics, Posture and disease.
  2. 2When can flexibility become a problem causing increased risk of injury? We when become hyperflexible
  3. 3What is osteoporosis?Loss of bone mineral density
  4. 4What is lordosis?A forward concave of the spine
  5. 5What is scoliosis? An abnormal lateral curve of the spine.
  6. 6What can muscle looseness do to muscles performance? What relationship proves this?Decrease efficiency. The negative correlation between the sit and reach test and running efficiency.
  7. 7What is the effect of increased muscle compliance on sprinting ability? Suggest a potential reason why this might be the case?Increased muscle compliance is associated with increased sprinting ability. might be due to increased muscle compliance means less risk of injury so more time training.
  8. 8What happens to muscles that are fixed at a shortened length? e.g. when they are in plaster cast? They lose sarcomeres so become shorter
  9. 9Explain what happens when we increase sarcomeres length in relation to muscle power. We increase power, this is because the distance the sarcomeres shorten over the same period of time is greater therefore the velocity of contraction is greater and velocity determines power.
  10. 10Explain how a countermovement can increase the height of a vertical jump.A countermovement is a movement in the opposite direction in order to activate the muscle before a movement. It gives time for the muscle to activate, forming cross bridge links. If we relax the muscle this elastic energy is released.
  11. 11Explain what happens the the muscle tendon complex during isometric contraction. Our muscle in not totally stationary. We contract the muscle at the expense of the tendon stretching meaning the overall position does not change but the muscle gets a little shorter and the tendon a little longer.
