Flashcards
chemistry AS: Atomic structure
Cards in this deck (15)
- 1What is the relative charge and mass of a proton?Mass; 1
Charge: +1 - 2What is the relative charge and mass of a neutron?Mass: 1
Charge: 0 - 3What is the relative charge and mass of an electron?Mass: 1/1840
Charge: -1 - 4What is the definition of atomic number? The number of protons in the nucleus.
- 5What is the definition of mass number? The total number of protons and neutrons in the atom.
- 6What are isotopes? These are atoms with the same number of protons but different number of neutrons.
- 7Why do isotopes have similar chemical properties? This is because the electronic configuration is still the same. the only difference is that their physical properties are going to be different because they have different masses.
- 8What can mass spectrometer be used for?Determine all the
isotopes present in a sample of
an element and to therefore identify elements. - 9Ionisation: what is the process of electron impact?1) a vapourised sample is injected at low pressure
2) An electron gun fires high energy electrons at the sample which knocks off an electron
3) This forms positive ions with different charges - 10Ionisation; what is the process of electron spray?1) The sample is dissolved in a volatile, polar solvent
2) Then it is injected through a fine hypodermic needle giving a mist
3) At the tip the sample gains a proton from the solvent - 11What happens in the acceleration stage?Positive ions are accelerated by an electric field with the same kinetic energy.
- 12What happens in the flight tube stage?1) The positive ions with smaller m/z values will have the same kinetic energy as those with larger m/z and will move
faster
2) The heavier particles take longer to move through the drift area.
The ions are distinguished by different flight time - 13What happens in the detection stage?Ions reach the detector and generate a small current which is the fed to a computer for analysis.
The size of the current is proportional to the abundance of the species. - 14What can the mass spec measure?m/z (mass/charge ratio) and abundance
