Flashcards

L8 - Nervous System

Diane Nguyen IMED2004 English 32 cards

Cards in this deck (32)

  1. 1Dorsal part of neural tube is for...Sensation and input
  2. 2Ventral part of neural tube is for...motor activity and output
  3. 3Integrating neurons form where in the neural tube?in between the dorsal and ventral
  4. 4Origin of Nerves- wall of the neural crest (form most of sensory, somatic sensory)
    - neural tube (form most of motor system and integrating neurons)
  5. 5Ependymal Cells- glial cells found in CNS
    - stem cells of all neurons
    - ependyma; layer still persists in adult neural tube
  6. 6Neural Tube Derivatives- brain and spinal cord = CNS
  7. 7Rostral Expansion of the Neural Tube- rostral end starts to form brain vesicles (wk 7)
    - walls of the tube expand, fold, increase in size differentially
    - folding in brain: increase surface area - more neurons, more surface area
    - especially intense folding of cortex area
  8. 8Telencephalon forms...the cerebrum
  9. 9Rhombencephalon forms...the hindbrain
  10. 10Formation of Ventricles- central canal expands inside forebrain to form ventricles
  11. 11Choroid Plexus- fold of very fine blood vessels located in lining of ventricles
    - lateral, 3rd, 4th, down the spinal cord
  12. 12Where is CSF reabsorbed into?Large venous sinus (superior sagittal sinus)
  13. 13Lateral Ventricle- 1st and 2nd joined together
  14. 14Cerebral Aqueduct- tube joins the lateral and 3rd aquaduct
  15. 154th Ventricle- rhomboid shaped space in front of cerebellum
    - part of hindbrain
  16. 16Different Terms for White Matter- capsule
    - bundle
    - fasciculus
    - filet
    - peduncle
    - tract
    - column
    - crus
    - pyramid
  17. 17What is white matter?- myelinated neuronal processes
    - due to myelin on axons
    - concentration of fibres
  18. 18What is grey matter?- concentrated cell bodies
    - relative density of cell bodies vs fibres gives grey appearance
  19. 19CNS Glial Cells- ependymal
    - astrocyte
    - microglia
    - oligodendroglia
  20. 20PNS Glial Cells- Schwann
    - satellite
  21. 21Layers of Connective Tissue Covering of the PNS- epnineurium
    - perineurium
    - endoneurium
  22. 22Thalamus- two big clusters of grey matter on either side of the 3rd ventricle
    - integrates/sorts out our sensory information
  23. 23Globus pallidus- pale shell
    - paler due to kinds of shells
    - integrating motor
  24. 24Spinal cord finishes at which vertebrae?L2
  25. 25Neural Crest Produces- dorsal root ganglia
    - ganglia of sympathetic and parasympathetic
    - melanocytes
    - adrenal gland
    - neuroendocrine cells - enteroendocrine cells in gut
  26. 26Types of Neurons- Sensor
    - Integrative: bipolar, interneuron, pyramidal, purkinje
    - Motor neuron
  27. 27What do glial cells do?- support and protect neurons
    - important for nutrition, protection, blood brain barrier
  28. 28Oligodendroglia- glial cell which wraps up a few nerves
    - problem for regenerating nerve fibres
  29. 29Are most post ganglion nerves of the autonomic system are non-myelinated or myelinated?non-myelinated
  30. 30Microglia- a macrophage
    - comes from blood system
    - important in clearing up debris
  31. 31Astrocyte- star shaped cell
    - act as barrier around neuron
    - intermediary between neuron and blood cells/blood vascular system
    - protect neurons
  32. 32Node of Ranvier- facilitates rapid 'saltatory' conduction
    - gap in myelin sheath of nerve, between adjacent Schwann cells
