About Neural Development, Evolution and Ageing
GoConqr OriginalWhat this unit covers
The unit follows the nervous system from its earliest stages to later life. Early material looks at neural induction, the Ventralisation of neural tube mind map and patterning of the anterior-posterior axis. Later material moves to cortex formation, cell migration, cell proliferation and the ageing brain.
Wiring is a big theme. The Axon guidance 1 mind map asks how connectivity arises and covers pioneer axons, chemoattraction, chemorepulsion, contact attraction and contact repulsion. The Cue integration and regeneration strategies map then looks at how responses to cues are modified.
Where to start
- Begin with the Development of the nervous system mind map for the overall sequence.
- Move to the Ventralisation of neural tube and Neural induction maps for early patterning.
- Work through Axon guidance 1 and Axon guidance 2, then the flashcard deck on Axon guidance, which asks about Sperry's and Weiss's hypotheses and Sperry's frog experiment.
- Finish with Synaptogenesis, Cell death and Synapse stabilization.
Using quizzes and maps together
Read a mind map first, then take a quiz on the same topic. The quiz on Mechanisms of Neural Development suits the early stages, while the Neurodevelopment quiz is a broader check. Where you slip, go back to the matching map branch. For example, the Synaptogenesis map explains why synapse formation is competitive, and the Cell death map notes that roughly half of neurons are lost in development.
Ageing, evolution and disorders
The unit also reaches past development. Look at the Ageing Brain flashcards, the Evolution of the nervous system deck, the APOE, Brain Reserve and Cognition map and the Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders map.
Where it fits
This unit sits in the Development and Plasticity strand of Neuroscience. It connects naturally to the Neuroplasticity mind map. Choose one topic today, test yourself, then turn what you learn into your own maps and flashcards.
Frequently asked questions
Which resource should I open first?
Start with the Development of the nervous system mind map to get the overall sequence. Then move to the Neural induction and Ventralisation of neural tube maps for early patterning, and take the Mechanisms of Neural Development quiz to see what has stuck.
What do the axon guidance resources cover?
The Axon guidance 1 mind map covers guidance cues, pioneer axons and four forces: chemoattraction, chemorepulsion, contact attraction and contact repulsion. The flashcard deck on Axon guidance tests Sperry's and Weiss's hypotheses and Sperry's frog experiment. Cue integration and regeneration strategies continues the topic.
Are these resources free to use?
Yes. Every resource listed here is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users, not by GoConqr. A free account also saves your quiz scores and lets you create your own quizzes, mind maps, flashcards and notes.
Who are these resources for?
They are mainly for university students, who make up nearly all of the resources here, practising recall of mechanisms such as patterning, guidance and cell death. Teachers can also use the maps, flashcard decks and quizzes as ready-made material for classes.
Does the page include anything on ageing and disorders?
Yes. You will find an Ageing Brain flashcard deck, a Life span development of the brain deck, the APOE, Brain Reserve and Cognition mind map, a Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders map, and an Autism flowchart, alongside the developmental material.
What if I cannot find the topic I need?
Try nearby titles first, since topics such as cell migration or synapse stabilization appear as separate maps. If something is still missing, you can build your own mind map, flashcards or quiz with a free account and keep it for revision.
