Authentic Assessment vs. Traditional Assessment

1. Authentic assessment allows teachers to see direct evidence of understanding through real world tasks.

   • Real World Tasks includes but aren't limited to:
     • reading with partners retelling role playing giving descriptions oral reporting to the whole class debating brainstorming
     • Assessment drives curriculum
     • How I will use authentic assessment in my class
       • I plan on getting 3 different books in Spanish based off my students interests
         • Let her select the one she wants to read.
           • Then have her write about the elements of the story in Spanish or English or through illustration
   • How to create authentic assessment
     • Identify the standards
       • Develop the task you want accomplished
         • Criteria, or what is expected to be completed
           • Rubric
   • Initial Assessment Strategies:
     • Legally obligated to do by the US Govt.
       • No Child Left Behind 2001
       • Civil Rights Act VI -1964
       • Bilingual Education Act VII 1968
     • Home language survey
       • Parents are required to alert the school to any other languages spoken in the home other than English so educational adjustments can be made.
     • Test in Home Langauge
       • Gauges prior knowledge separately from language ability
     • Formal tests or story retelling
     • Educational Backgroud of the student
       • Dates of previous school attendence
       • life events
       • grade level equivelnce
       • Type of school previously attended
       • Educational background of family members
       • Important health in formation, like allergies
   • Authentic Assessment is also called Informal assessment
     • Ongoing tracking of students progression
       • Real world tasks are informal assessments

2. Traditional Assessment is a uniform way for students to demonstrate what they know through a narrow scope typically mandated by the district or school.

   • Traditional assessments examples are teacher created tests or standardized tests
     • Curriculum drives assessment
       • Traditional assessment in standardized test form data can be used to determine funding

3. My Thoughts:

   • Authentic assessment is the best way to assess what students know
     • Real world experience is the best indicator of understanding
     • Importance of authentic instruction
       • Research backed- Ken Goodman, Yetta Goodman, Stephen Krashen, Lev Vygotsky, etc
   • Traditional Assessment has more clout, because it reduces what students "know" to a score
     • This can be done on a larger scale that authentic assessment- example ACCESS testing
   • Finding the balance
     • Figuring that out
