Charges, Atoms, Isotopes
Charges.
- Protons have a positive charge.
- Electrons have a negative charge.
- Neutrons have no charge/ they're neutral.
- Atoms have no overall charge because they have the same amount of protons and electrons. Protons have a positive charge and electrons have a negative charge. Therefore, they cancel each other's charges out.
- Atoms can lose or gain ions, when they do, they become ions.
- If an atom loses 1 or more electrons it becomes a positively charged ion.
- LIMP- Losing It Makes Positive.
- If an atom gains 1 or more electrons it becomes negatively charged.
- If an atom loses 1 or more electrons it becomes a positively charged ion.
Isotopes.
- Atomic number and Mass number.
- The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom is called its atomic number.
- The atoms of the same element all have the same number of protons.
- The atoms of different elements have different numbers of protons.
- The total number of protons and neutrons in an atoms is called its Mass number.
- The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom is called its atomic number.
- Atomic number and Mass number.
