  1. Pedestrians were the first professional sportsmen in the UK. They were paid athletes representing Upper Class Patrons mainly in the sports of boxing, horse racing and cricket.
    1. Public schools ; plays a huge role in the codification and development of modern sport. Thery; developed universal rules, entered oxbridge and refined rules, became teachers who were commmited to muscular christianity and using sport to build character, formed amaeteur governing bodies, invested in sport teams and spread sport around the world
      1. Elite sport in UK intially channellled through Universities and heavily influenced by class. Gentleman amateur; mainly upper class who could afford to play sport for free. Proffessional; mainly working class who couldnt afford to take time off without pay
        1. East Germany; used sport as a 'show window' to demonstrate superiority of communism
          1. Pros; developed concept of talent ID (primary children identified early through fitness tests and sent to sports boarding schools. Used sports science to enhance performance (hypoxic chambers, monitoring athletes), State of the art coaching facilities.
            1. Cons; state plan 1425 authorised the use of performance enhancing drugs, given to athletes without their knowledge. This lead to massive health problems. Win at all cost attitude.
            2. Australia; famous for the AIS, providing world class facilities with top coaches and sport science support for athletes
              1. AIS famous for; Sports search talent ID programme (fitness tests to identify potential athletes in sports), Super Roo bike; AIS scientists developed aerodynamic Super Roo bike which helped aussie cyclists to success, World famous authorities in physiology, biomechanics, sports nutrition
              2. USA; elite sport is channelled through school and college system, features of highh school and college sport include;
                1. Finacial support from local communities, Commercially very profitable, highly competitive leagues, highly paid coaches with top class facilities, sports science support
                  1. Most professional sports have a draft system where top ranked student athletes are chosen by teams. very few of the athletes make the grade
                    1. America is famous for LOMBARDIAN ETHIC (win at all cost attitude)
                  2. United Kingdom; have four methods of funding; Salary (professional clubs), Sponorship (nike), Charities (e.g lottery), State funding (taxes).
                    1. UK sport deveoped the WORL CLASS PERFORMANCE PATHWAY to support many ameateur athletes. World class podium (performers with potential to win medals in 6 years), World class development (performers likely to wim medals in 10 years, World class talent (performers likely to achieve world class success
                    2. State funding has recently been slashed. Sports like volleyball have suffered because they are not considered a sport that will succeed
                      1. Private companies have started to invest in sports e.g SKY with british cycling this has been good for both sport and advertisement
