Memory

  1. RAM

    • Random access storage
    • Quicker to read and write than any other storage in a computer
    • Quick access to the data and programs in use
    • Volatile memory
    • Any data on the computer once turned off will be lost
      • All data would be lost
  2. ROM

    • Read only memory
    • Contains the programs that allow your computer to 'boot up'
    • Non-volatile memory
    • Data and programs that are stored in ROM are not lost when the computer is turned off
      • Still remain in the ROM when loaded back up
    • Every computer needs this to be able to start up, but is not needed after it has started it up
  3. Flash memory

    • A type of flash memory storage device used to store data long-term
    • Non-volatile memory
    • Solid state storage device as no moving parts inside
    • Quicker to read and write from as the computer does not need to need to wait for the device to warm up
    • Flash memory can be found in devices such as -USB memory sticks, SD cards, Solid state drives (SSD)
  4. Optical storage

    • Advantages
      • Uses a lens and a light beam to read and write onto a disk
      • Very portable, small and light
      • Very cheap to manufacture
      • Very durable and resulting in them being safe to store data for long periods of time
    • Disadvantages
      • Storage capacity of disks is relatively small compared to others
      • In some cases special disks are required to read/write from a disk
