Email Protocols
  1. This is a seperate system of protocols that have been devised to be used purely by email
    1. SMTP
      1. This stands for simple mail transfer protocol
        1. This is the standard way to send messages across networks into your email server
          1. They then get sent to the recipitants email server
          2. Advantages
            1. Used by nearly every computer
              1. Simple protocol
                1. Universally recognised
                2. Disadvantages
                  1. Very little security
                    1. Lacks certain functions
                      1. Simplicity limits usefulness
                    2. POP3
                      1. Stands for post office protocol 3
                        1. The method of recieving emails, where you download emails from the server to your computer
                          1. These emails then get deleted from the server, meaning they can be seen without an internet connection but only on that device
                          2. Advantages
                            1. It is a lot more secure than other recieving protocols
                              1. Don't have to be connected to the internet to read emails once they have been dowloaded
                                1. Takes up minimal storage space in your email server
                                2. Diadvantages
                                  1. Only a single device to recieve from,
                                    1. Emails can become corrupted or lost
                                      1. Takes up storage space on your hard drive
                                    2. IMAP
                                      1. Stands for internet message access protocol
                                        1. Another way of recieving emails, where the user accesses them whilst they are on their email server
                                          1. They are then stored on the server
                                          2. Advantages
                                            1. Can be accessed on a range of different devices
                                              1. Multiple addresses to recieve emails on
                                                1. Email can be repeatedly accessed from the server
                                                2. Disadvantages
                                                  1. Requires constant internet access
                                                    1. Takes up a lot of server space
