4. Aquatic life can still live under ice; water is densest at 4 degrees- then shrinks
5. Requires lots of energy to seperate water + hydrogen molecules apart
6. Cohesive structure

Cohesive properties:
1. Water molecules stick together --> Hydrogen bonds
  1. Water: dragged up via Xylem vessels to top leaves of trees
2. Surface tension
  1. Living things can live on surface of ponds & streams e.g. pondskater
Solvent properties:
1. Universal solvent
  1. Can dissolve many substances esp POLAR ones.
    1. POLAR: Substances that have + & - charges in molecular structure.
  2. Only HYDROPHOBIC substances DON'T dissolve in water
2. Metabolic reactions happen in AQUEOUS solutions
3. Many substances can be transported around if dissolved in SAP/BLOOD
Transports materials e.g. blood, sap

    1. 6CO2 + 6H2O ------> C6H1206 + 6O2
    2. Carbon Dioxide + Water -------> Glucose + Oxygen
2. Hydrogen (slightly +) attracted to Oxygen (slightly -) ---> Covalent bonding between them
  1. Water is stable structure; numerous HYDROGEN bonds
  2. Water structure is DIPOLAR
    1. Electrically neutral molecule carrying + & - charge
