Secondary Storage

  1. it is non-volatile storage needed in a computer system to store programs , operating systems or files

    • non-volatile means that the data is saved when the computer system is turned off
  2. optical storage

    • CDs
    • DVDs
    • Blu-Rays
    • advantages
      • the cost effect is good.
      • it is very portable
    • disadvantages
      • not very durable
      • has a limited capacity
  3. solid state (flash) storage

    • uses microchips to store data instead of magnetised disks and do not contain any moving parts.
    • advantages
      • more durable and can read and write data much faster than magnetic
      • it is also more energy efficient.
    • disadvantages
      • less cost effective compared to magnetic because it has a smaller capactity.
      • it has limited read/write lifespan
    • hard drive (HPE Nimble storage)
    • HPE SimpliVity(hard drive)
  4. Magnetic Storage

    • data is stored by magnetising the surface of flat, circular plates called platters. These platters rotate at a very high speed
    • advantages
      • the cost effective is better due to having a larger capacity than solid state therefore it will allow the platters to store more items on it.
    • disadvantages
      • not as durable due to moving parts compared to Solid State therefore it is more likely to be smashed.
      • Magnetic Storage reads and writes data slower
    • hard drive
    • hard drive (internally mounted)
    • hard drive (external and portable)
