Theories of drug abuse Kiet Tran
  1. Biological Theory
    1. "Kinds of people". This is the physical theory that makes people experiment drugs and how they can obtain an addictive personality. This can be affected be genetics or environmental factors at a young age.
      1. Genetic Theory- The genetic makeup of a person can define your abilities when it comes to drinking or drug use. How ones' body reacts to the drug can depend on their parents genes and which genes they have passed on to you.
        1. Metabolic Imbalance- This theory suggests that once a person has a certain something, their body reacts to needing the other drug. They can't help it because it's in their body and they will fiend for it until they have it. It's comparable to when a diabetic needs insulin.
    2. Psychological Theory
      1. "Kinds of people". The psychological theory is based on the mind and hows people's thought processes work. Reinforcement plays a role in this theory. It also depends on the person's personality traits to why they use a certain drug.
        1. Reinforcement- This theory has no explanation other than what an individual feels. There is positive reinforcement where when one takes a drug they get a pleasure from it. If they like the drug and how it makes them feel, they will continue to use that drug in the future. This then leads to dependency for the drug, which leads to addiction. There is also negative reinforcement, where a user achieves the feeling of relief or covers their feeling of pain by using. They use the drug as a getaway from whatever they don't enjoy in life. It can be caused by simple reasons, but in the end can cause addiction.
          1. Inadequate personality- This theory is about people who lack the normal personality traits (responsibility, independence, wanting to achieve goals) often turn to drugs they find appealing. Low self-esteem and self- reject are the most common when looking into these personalities and attitudes. Of course when an individual is struggling with these problems, it's hard to change and get rid of those feelings and traits a person carries. That's why they can become drug abusers and never get better.
            1. Problem-Behavior Proneness- The outsiders that like to be different in society and "deviant" mostly fall in this category. There is good and bad in this act. Problem-behavior prone individuals are known to be creative and enjoy being the outsiders. The downside is that they don't care what anyone thinks and can act out depending on various situations. The word "unconventional" is important. Also the more unconventional the person is, the more drug use is most likely to occur in the future. There is the mild, moderate, and highly unconventional types of people in this theory. Mild being the least likely to have serious drug problems, versus the high unconventional which have the most risk of having serious drug problems.
      2. Sociological Theory
        1. The sociological theory is unlike the first two theories. Mostly because unlike the theory relating to only the individual, this theory focuses on possible factors and surroundings of an individual.
          1. Social disorganization- Community or neighborhood disorganization
            1. Anomie/strain theory- Disjunction between means and ends
              1. Social control theory- Absence of bonds to conventional society
                1. Self-control theory- Inadequate parenting leading to lack of self-control
                  1. Social learning and subculture theory-Deviant socialization
                    1. Selective interaction/ socialization theory- Attraction to unconventionality, and influence by peer groups
                      1. Conflict theory- Differences in power, resources, and opportunities
