Geological Eras

  1. Eras

    • Paleozoic
      • Its meaning is Ancient Life and this was an epoch of dramatic, geological and evolutionary change. It is subdivided into six geologic periods that are: the Permian, Pennsylvanian, Mississippian, Devonian, Silurian, Ordovician and Cambrian. In one period of this era the modern Phyla first appeared various forms of organisms like: Arthropods, Molluscs, Fish, Amphibians, Synapsids and Diapsids. Great forests of primitive plants covered the continents, towards the end of the era modern plants like: Conifers appeared and also ended with the largest extinction, its effects were devastating.
      • Cambrian
      • Pennsylvanian
      • Mississippian
      • Devonian
      • Silurian
      • Permian
      • Ordovician
    • Mezozoic
      • It is also called the Age of Reptiles and the Age of Conifers. Its meaning is Middle Life and this era is subdivided into three major periods: the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous. The era began in the wake of the Triassic extinction event, and ended with the Cretaceous extinction event, and this were part of the mass extinction. The Mesozoic era was a time of significant tectonic, climate varied alternating: warming and cooling periods, and evolutionary activity. The dinosaurs first appeared in the Mid-Triassic, and became the dominant terrestrial vertebrates, occupying this position for about 150 or 135 million years. Birds first appeared in the Jurassic. The first mammals also appeared during the Mesozoic, but would remain small. The flowering plants arose in the Triassic or Jurassic.
      • Triassic
      • Jurassic
      • Cretaceous
    • Cenozoic
      • Which began about 65 million years ago. The current locations of the continents and their modern-day inhabitants, including humans, can be traced to this period. The era began with the extinction of Cretaceous period. The name is derived from the Greek phrase meaning Recent Life.
        • Holocene
        • Pleistocene
        • Pliocene
        • Miocene
        • Oligocene
        • Eocene
        • Paleocene
  2. Eones

    • Phanerozoic
      • The Phanerozoic, the eon also called Visible Life, it did a rapid expansion and evolution of forms that occur and fill the various ecological niches available. The Earth’s atmosphere contained negligible amounts.
    • Precambrian
      • Period of time extending from about 4.6 billion years ago. This is the point in which Earth began to form. The Precambrian represents more than 80 percent of the total geologic record.
